Postcard from Bob Berkowitz: Notes from the Frontline

Bob Berkowitz shared a story with me this week you might like to hear.

Bob said, “A young girl came to me the other day with a book about the Potato Famine and was so pleased.”  She said, “Oh, Mr. Berkowitz!  This is such a great book about the Potato Famine that I’m sure I can write my whole report from just this book!”

“That’s interesting,” Bob said.  “Let’s think about this a minute.”

“Imagine three equal circles, all intersecting like a Venn Diagram.  Each circle represents a different book or resource. The target is this piece in the middle where all the circles overlap — I’ll put a dot that piece for a 10/10 or ‘A’ score.  To get to that piece in the middle you’d need  to pull information from each source circle, think about it, and include it in your report.”

Bob continued…..”Now think about just one circle with one dot in it.” This is worth 1/10, an ‘F’”.  “I won’t tell you what to do, because this is an ethics question…..but…..here is the information you might want to think about.”
