Directions
Plan
Gather: 2 pieces of construction paper, blunt scissors, glue.
Print: these 2 game sheets
Do
Prepare the game pieces:
1. Cut the game sheets apart on the dotted lines.
2. Cut each piece of construction paper into 4 parts the same size (fold it first, open the page, and cut on the folded lines)
3. Glue each of the game pieces onto the pieces of cut construction paper to make cards. Let them dry.
Play the game:
1. Mix up the cards.
2. Put them face down on a table or the floor. Mix them up again.
3. Turn one over. Turn another over. Does the Super3 match its description? If not, turn them face down again and try again. If you get a match, put the pair—2 cards—to the side. Keep trying until you get three matching pairs.
Review
Do you know which Super3 (Plan, Do, Review) goes with each description? Do you know what Plan, Do, and Review mean? If you did not make matches, who can you ask for help?
Think about your favorite rainy day game or activity.
Use the Super3 to share it with other kids by following these directions:
1. Write a title for the activity.
(Example: Let’s Go Fishing!)
2. Write a short introduction that will make other kids want to do it.
(Example: Hey, Kids! Do you like to fish? Here is a way to make a fishing game by using items you may find around your house and the Super3 to help!)
3. Use the Super3 to organize the instructions so any other kid can do the activity.
Plan
In one or two sentences tell what kids will do. This is like the main idea of the game.
(Example: Make and learn to play a fishing game.)
In one or two sentences tell what they need to find out about in order the make and do the activity.
(Example: You need to find out what materials I need and how to make the game pieces. You need to learn the rules of the game.)
Do
List materials that kids will need to gather. Materials that are found around the house work best.
Write a detailed list of instructions for making the game or doing the activity.
Review
Now instruct the kids to play the game or do the activity. Ask them questions to make sure that they have done it right. Give them some ways to change or make the activity different the next time they do it.
(Example: After you play the game, think about what you liked and did not like about it. Did you follow the rules? How can you change the game to make it more interesting to you if you play again? Now, clean up the game pieces and put them away for another rainy day!)
4. Now, have a parent or teacher read your rainy day activity and edit for spelling, grammar and safety. They need to try the activity to make sure you did not leave out any steps.
5. Have your parent or teacher email the activity to the Big6 Kids Editor, Barbara Jansen at bjansen@tenet.edu
6. If your activity is chosen for publication on Big6 kids, we will only use your first name and last initial and your city. If you wish for us to publish your school name, please have your parent or teacher give us permission in the email.
Good luck and have fun writing your rainy day activity!
Hey, Kids! Do you like to fish? Here is a way to make a fishing game by using items you may find around your house and the Super3 to help!
Plan
What do I need to do?
Make and learn to play a fishing game.
What do I need to find out about in order to do the job?
I need to find out what materials I need and how to make the game pieces.I need to learn the rules of the game.
Do
Gather materials:
Make the game:
1. Fold one piece of construction paper into half and then in half again to make four boxes when opened. 2. Draw a fish in each box, making it almost as large as the box. 3. Write the number 1 on one fish, the number 2 on another fish, the number 3 on another fish, and the number 4 on the last fish 4. Decorate the fish with crayons or markers. 5. Cut out each fish. 6. Repeat steps 1-5 with the other piece of construction paper. 7. Tie one end of the string around a rock or film canister. 8. Tie the other end of the string around on of the sticks. 9. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for the other stick.
Now you are ready to learn the rules of the game:
This game is played with two players. It can be played outside, but it is a great inside game on a rainy day!
1. Spread all of the fish around your feet on the floor. They can be spaced unevenly. Make sure that there is no furniture to trip over or run into. 2. Each player picks a fish color. 3. Decide who goes first. This is Player 1. 4. Player 1: Look at your fish and notice where they are around your feet. Close your eyes and turn around slowly in place 2 or 3 times. Keeping your eyes closed, lower your fishing pole onto one of your fish. Open your eyes. 5. Player 1 “catches” one of his fish by lowering the weight onto a fish that is his color. That fish is removed and Player 1 gets the number of points that are on the fish. 6. If Player 1 “catches” a fish that is not his, he or she must subtract the number of points that are on the fish and the fish remains on the floor. 7. Repeat steps 4-6 with Player 2. 8. Take turns until all the fish have been caught. 9. The winner is the one who has the most points at the end of the game.
Now that you know the rules, you are ready to play the game.
Review
After you play the game, think about what you liked and did not like about it. Did you follow the rules? How can you change the game to make it more interesting to you if you play again?
Now, clean up the game pieces and put them away for another rainy day!
